The rollers hurtling in from Lake Ontario to the St. Lawrence River and banging our boats around took the ladder off our dock and yanked this rear cleat completely out of the dock.
Chris Cobb, an artist based in San Francisco, has created an amazing installation in bookshop called Adobe Books- he catalogued every single one of the 20,000 books by color. The project is titled There is Nothing Wrong in This Whole Wide World. They were arranged by hand over a 10 hour period, and he enlisted the help of 16 volunteers. Such beautiful results, they transformed the bookshop overnight.

Near Laurelton, Queens, icy roads hampered these southbound motorists on the Belt Parkway on Jan. 9, 1969. Elsewhere on that day, while these poor souls were stuck in traffic, the Concorde took its first test flight and Led Zeppelin played at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Photo: Ernie Sisto/The New York Times

From PSFK:

This vending machine is great for book lovers who can’t decide on their next read. Built by Craig Small for antiquarian bookshop The Monkey’s Paw in Toronto, the Biblio-Mat gives you a random old book when you insert $2. Sporting the claim of 112 million titles and no two alike, the Biblio-Mat offers customers a literary surprise that can vary widely in size and subject matter.

The sound of an old telephone bell and a clunk signal that the mystery book has been dispensed. The machine was created as a fun alternative to a bargain bin where customers can dig through discounted books. You can check it out in the video above.

By JOHN M. BRODER

The thunderstorm and tornado swarms of early 2011, including the monstrous Joplin, Mo., disaster. Hurricane Irene, which inundated much of the Northeast. The worst heat wave in Russia in 1,000 years. Record-shattering heat and drought in much of the United States this year. The lowest level of Arctic sea ice ever measured. The melting of virtually the entire ice sheet of Greenland, something not seen in 30 years of satellite measurements.

And yet climate change is barely a blip on the political radar in this year’s campaign. Read more…
